ArtsEast Information
About us
ArtsEast is the home of Eastern Oregon Regional Arts Council located in La Grande, Oregon. We have a history of service to eastern Oregon artists, arts organizations, and communities. Since our inception in 1977 as a non-profit organization, ArtsEast has delivered arts education/outreach programs to regional schools and communities and hosted visual arts exhibitions and performance series. ArtsEast has also been the hub of arts information and a resource for fostering the development of rural arts and cultural organizations. Our service region includes the 10 most eastern counties in Eastern Oregon.
We strive to provide services to all ages, abilities and ethnicities; support the arts and culture in every community that requests service; and provide quality services as cost effectively as possible. Our twelve-member not-for-profit board of directors and our staff carefully administers, coordinates, and delivers ArtsEast’s programs.
Below you will find short descriptions of the Arts Learning programs that ArtsEast offers:
Artists in Residence
Since 1982, ArtsEast has contracted with regional schools and communities to provide Artist Residencies in eastern Oregon. On average we provide 45 weeks per year or 900 contact hours of arts instruction in public schools. We offer residencies in dance, theater, writing, visual arts and music. Our 27 artists are required to develop sequential and developmentally appropriate arts lessons based on Oregon Arts Standards.
School Assemblies and Performances
We collaborate with arts organizations and performers to provide school assemblies and performances. In 2009-10, we presented: Tiller’s Folly, a Canadian Celtic band, in Baker City, Heppner and La Grande; the Young Americans, a week long, theater, dance and choral workshops in Wallowa and Union Counties; and the Eugene Ballet at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
Community School of the Arts
We offer a wide variety of arts classes like pottery, jewelry making, stained glass, individual music lessons, figure drawing, Kindermusik, weaving and belly dancing. Kindermusik with “Miss Jamie” is one of our most popular offerings. This summer we are bringing the Missoula Children's Theater to work with 55 students to perform "The Princess and the Pea."
Youth on the Move
An after-school program for Latino children in Nyssa, led by NEA national award winning folk artist Eva Castellanoz. This program was developed to give students a safe place to be and to learn Latino arts.
Free Arts Classes
We offer free weekly ballroom dancing classes for teens/adults. We have as many as 45 people who range in age from 10-83 attend our ballroom dance classes. We provide an instructor free of charge for the La Grande High School Dance Club. We offer African drumming classes for children between the ages of 10-14 after school on Fridays.
Children’s Choir
Students grades 2-6 rehearse weekly to develop voice/music abilities as well as self-confidence. They perform throughout the year.
Community Band
An intergenerational band that rehearses weekly for fall, winter, and spring concerts. The band provides large ensemble experiences for students from small schools.
GreenStrings
A free twice-weekly after school strings program at Greenwood Elementary in La Grande. ArtsEast provides instruments at no cost to the students.
Arts Partners for Success
A partnership with the Union County Juvenile Drug Court to provide bi-monthly arts classes for offenders.
Artist and Teacher Professional Development
Workshops for K-12 teachers held on the statewide in-service day or in schools during residencies and our annual professional development workshops and/or camps.
Collaborations
We help sponsor various performances, festivals, camps, classes and workshops with other arts organizations in the region. On-going partnerships include Brass & Woodwind Camps @ Wallowa Lake in Joseph, Arts have Class in Pendleton, and Arts for All in La Grande.
Art Gallery
The gallery at ArtsEast exhibits artwork by emerging and established professional artists in eastern Oregon. The gallery hosts Opening Receptions where the public is invited to meet with the artists. Most artwork exhibited is for sale, with the gallery taking 30% commission. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.
The works for the show are typically submitted by the artist (i.e., artist answering a ‘call for entry’), though occasionally works are juried into an exhibition. Every other year, the gallery sponsors the juried “Artists of Eastern Oregon Show” where works by eastern Oregon artists are selected. Recipients of the “Honored Artist” award are then invited to exhibit their work in a group show the following year. Professional development workshops specifically designed for artists, but are open to anyone interested, are held in conjunction with the “Artists of Eastern Oregon Show.”
ArtsEast Gallery does not carry “exclusive” contracts with artists. The gallery’s goal is two-fold: to offer a venue for emerging and established artists to exhibit and sell their work and to expose the public to a variety of artforms created by local and regional artists.
