About the Artist:
Jan became a professional singer-songwriter and traveled widely for 20 years, playing in restaurants, coffee houses, giving concerts and making television appearances. As a returning student in Portland, Oregon, she studied photography, illustration and sculpture. She now lives and works in Eastern Oregon. As a volunteer Wildlife Steward for three years, she worked primarily with third and fourth-grade students to develop a wildlife habitat which subsequently appeared on "Outdoor Talk". Multnomah County presented Jan with its "Volunteer of the Year award".

Residency Objectives:
The projects will be largely related to history, social studies and science, but may overlap many other areas of study. All classes can be tailored to teachers' needs. Through sculptural projects, a program will be designed to incorporate photographic references, pencil studies, and a painted surface of the final sculpture. Students will learn to draw and photograph a subject, sculpt it in three-dimensional relief, and paint its surface. Music will be introduced and children will be encouraged to sing and experiment with song writing. Students will learn how history shaped our art and music as well as how the aesthetics of art and music have helped to tell our story and kept our heritage alive.

Staff and Community Offerings:
Jan offers private and group instruction in guitar to community members.

Facilities and Supplies:
Separate classroom for art projects would be ideal. Sculpture (clay or paper mâche), drawing (pencils), and painting materials (preferably acrylic), digital camera (artist provides). Artist will use all materials currently available in school’s inventory. Additional materials may be necessary.

Material Costs:
Cost varies according to project.

Connection to other Subjects:
History, Social Studies, Science, Art, Music and Crafts.
