About the Artist:
Okaidja has danced and drummed with groups in his native Ghana since childhood and has performed throughout Africa, Europe, and the U.S. He is renowned in his homeland and since moving to the U.S., he has performed as lead dancer in Obo Addy's Homowa group based in Portland. He loves to share his culture and music with students.

Residency Objectives:
Students will learn the basic techniques of Ghanian drumming by listening and learning rhythm sequences with a final performance for the school. During the residency, students will learn about the culture and people of Ghana through dialogue relating to the music. Okaidja can also give a community or school dance and drum performance.

Staff and Community Offerings:
Okaidja can teach staff basic African rhythms on the drum and give an overview of his country's culture. He can give a community or school dance and drum performance.

Facilities and Supplies:
Gym or other large space to set up drums for students.

Material Costs:
$50 fee to provide conga drums for residency.

Connection to other Subjects:
Music, P.E., African history and culture.
