Northeastern Oregon has benefited from the existence of the Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra for more than half a century. The orchestra represents a successful partnership among community members, Eastern Oregon University, and area business leaders. It is truly an outstanding example of a joint artistic venture in the community.
The orchestra was established in 1947 by Henry Ehlers, chairman of the music department of what is now Eastern Oregon University. It has been in continuous operation since its inception. At least ten others have led the orchestra, with current leadership provided with Music Director and Conductor Leandro Espinosa.
The orchestra gives three or four concerts annually in the beautiful McKenzie Theater in Mary Loso Hall on the campus of Eastern Oregon University, along with joint concerts, concerts in other communities, and other events.
