About the Artist : Susan earned a B.S. in Art Education, at the University of Washington and a M.S. in Art Education, at the University of Oregon. Susan had a long history of being a high school art teacher and retired in 2001 to spend more time making her own art and being a resident artist. “I walk along a line of fire that separates the teaching of the art form the creating of the art. I must always leap back and forth.”

Residency Description: Recycle, Re-create (K–12) Your art can help whales, salmon and ancient forests. Turn scraps into sculptures, use debris in drawings and paintings, transform discarded signs into banners. Art: drawing, painting, sculpture; cubism, abstract sculpture, expressionism; Jacob Lawrence. It’s All about Color (4–12) Be dazzling! Discover the power of color in a series of painting lessons using color palettes, patterns and designs from Mexico, China, Japan and Africa. Art: painting, drawing, collage. What Is Art For? (3–8) Widen and deepen your life. Communication, symbol making, self-expression, play, ritual, observation, fantasy and creativity are some of reasons we make art. Art: drawing, painting, designing graphic arts and sculpture.

Staff and Community Offerings: Susan offers classes for the community.

Facilities and Supplies: A self-contained classroom is ideal, however a cart to move supplies to and from classrooms is workable. Volunteers to set up and clean up.

Connection to other Subjects: Geography, History, Writing, Graphic Arts, Environmental Science, Music, Literature, and Multicultural Studies.
